COVID-19 Update: 02/12/2020

Today we officially exited the national lockdown and moved into tier 3, it would appear from the published infection rates that the lockdown has had a positive effect on containing the virus.

We introduced significant new measures for the second lockdown on-top of the rigorous control measures already in place. Constantly reviewing the status of COVID 19 and modifying how we operate as a business has allowed us to continue with our vital services to-date for all our C3 stakeholders.

Despite all these encouraging signs and reasons for genuine optimism, the COVID virus is still very much around us and still poses as much risk to human life as it did before. The current good practices and behaviours that are in place allow us to safeguard our on-going ability to help play our part in taking care of the most vulnerable in society.

Reliable service even in unreliable times

COVID-19 Update: 12/11/2020

COVID-19 Update: 05/10/2020

Commentary from many quarters supports the theory that lockdown measures in some form will be with us for at least the Winter period, and potentially beyond. In order to mitigate the negative aspects of these restrictions and maximize our ability to continue to support all our C3 stakeholders, Select Medical has created a virtual training facility. This will allow our commercial team to help support your needs during these difficult times via a remote solution, please contact our sales team to discuss your requirements.

Select Medical continues to provide all products and services, which remain guided by various risk assessment to ensure we all remain COVID-19 secure.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to the impacts of Covid-19 on our product or services, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 08/09/2020

To date we have maintained all services and performance levels throughout the pandemic.

We are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 situation and all previous COVID-19 procedures/protocols remain in place to ensure our site remains COVID SECURE.

There is a notable increase in customers returning to scheduled maintenance programs and our product stocks are very healthy. Should there be a second wave, or peak in demand that may come as a result of ‘winter pressures’, we’re well placed to support our clients.

COVID-19 Update: 06/08/2020

To increase control measures in Blackburn with Darwen, and other localised areas where there has been an increase in Covid cases, the HSE has introduced 5 steps that businesses should follow. Select Medical are adhering in full to these steps to keep operations ‘COVID Secure’. The 5 steps are as follows:

  • Step 1. Carry out a COVID-19 risk assessment
  • Step 2. Develop increased cleaning, hand washing and hygiene procedures
  • Step 3. Take all reasonable steps to help people work from home
  • Step 4. Maintain 2m social distancing where possible
  • Step 5. Where people cannot be 2m apart, manage transmission risk

As a result of all the measures we have implemented, we are now seeing a more consistent approach to providing a ‘COVID Secure’ environment and service. The DRT have therefore taken the decision to change our scheduled published updates from weekly to monthly. We will continue to meet weekly and monitor closely government /industry bodies advice and updates on the COVID-19 pandemic. We will of course communicate any relevant changes or information as and when any updates occur.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Contact Lee Elson via email lee.elson@selectmedical.co.uk or call us on 01254 668899.

COVID-19 Update: 27/07/2020

You may have noticed that the government website was updated on 25th July and now new local restrictions are in place for Blackburn with Darwen, therefore certain leisure facilities will not reopen as they are planned to in the rest of the UK. Additionally, the Luton area has now also been identified as requiring additional safeguarding measures. These updates do not require any changes to our already comprehensive safeguarding measures in place, our key services therefore will not be affected.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Contact Lee Elson via email lee.elson@selectmedical.co.uk or call us on 01254 668899.

COVID-19 Update: 23/07/2020

Further to our second update last week, we understand a decision on further ‘Covid measures’ will be made regarding our local, Blackburn area on 27th July 2020. Once there has been an announcement by the Council we will review this and respond accordingly. We remain confident that we will be able to continue with our important services following any changes the Council may recommend.

To maintain and foster the strong ethos at Select Medical, we are starting to arrange for externally based colleagues to visit head office on an individual basis. This will of course be carried out maintaining a ‘COVID Secure’ environment, and we believe it will make for the best way of working in what is becoming the new normal.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Contact Lee Elson via email lee.elson@selectmedical.co.uk or call us on 01254 668899.

COVID-19 Update: 15/07/2020

Following the new restrictive measures implemented at Blackburn and Darwen the DRT have this morning held an emergency unscheduled meeting to review the impact.  First and foremost, the new measures will not impact our ability to carryout the important services we provide for all of our C3 stakeholders. We have however reviewed our relevant risk assessments and updated them in response to Blackburn with Darwen council’s latest guidelines.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 14/07/2020

Recent re-lockdown measures within the Leicester area have served as a reminder of the importance of the strict measures we have put in place. They ensure Select Medical’s business operations and premises are ‘Covid-secure’ and that we have contingency planning for all eventualities.

This is particularly relevant with a reported rise in confirmed cases within the Blackburn area, where our HQ is based. We have operated safely throughout the whole period of national lockdown so we are confident that this will continue. Any new ‘local lockdowns’ will not adversely affect our ability to carry-out our important services. However, we are keeping a close eye on the situation and, if necessary, will implement new operational measures to ensure the smooth running of the business and safety of all staff and stakeholders.

Following the change in guidelines to make the wearing of face masks compulsory in retail and service outlets from the 24th July, we have reviewed our risk assessment around PPE. It is now mandatory for all staff to wear a face mask when entering customer premises, as well as all other environments, as mentioned in the new government guidelines.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Contact Lee Elson via email lee.elson@selectmedical.co.uk or call us on 01254 668899.

COVID-19 Update: 08/07/2020

Our careful planning saw the return of many staff to the office last week. All our external commercial staff, along with two office staff members, remain working from home.

We are continuing with our risk assessments, as outlined last week, with customers to ensure planned service work can also be carried out. A service schedule is now being built to undertake any outstanding service requirements.

We can report that up until the year to date:

  • 100% of all required LOLER testing in Care Homes is complete.
  • 100% of all urgent repairs are complete.
  • 100% of rental orders, installations and collections are complete.

Select Medical will continue to operate with safeguarding measures in place across all aspects of the business. These measures will stay in place until it is safe to do otherwise and will be reviewed weekly against government guidelines and industry bodies best practice. Given recent events with the introduction of localised lock-downs, specific attention will also be paid to any local or regional measures that may affect our operation.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 03/07/2020

Over the last 2 weeks following a careful risk assessment and introducing additional measures around the building, the DRT are certain that Select Medical is aligned to government guidance and the site is ‘COVID Secure’. Therefore, a number of other office staff have now returned to work. All externally based commercial staff remain working from home, along with some office staff who can work effectively from home.

We continue to work efficiently and in June we completed 98% of customer orders, with an average delivery time of 1.2 days – so most customers received next day delivery.

We are also happy to report that following an extensive risk assessment with our customers, to ensure we carefully balance the need for service and repair work with the safety of all affected parties, we now have a programmed schedule of work. This allows us to visit and conduct the appropriate service and repair work our customers require, keeping safety for all as the priority. If you have not been contacted, or have any queries about scheduling service and repair work, please do not hesitate to contact our service team on 01254 668899 and they will walk you through our risk assessment process.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 24/06/2020
[metaslider id=”2841″]

This week saw the return of a number of key staff return to the office. The building was fully risk assessed prior to this step with numerous reminders around Covid-19 procedures going up in all areas of the building.

The DRT meeting discussed ways that external site visits to the HQ may resume, and although not imminent, we are hoping over the coming months that we can accommodate this and will keep you posted.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 17/06/2020

Covid signsAs part of our continuing COVID-19 risk assessment programme, and following the decision to return some key staff members to the office, increasing signage around the building was one area identified as required. This week new posters and reminders on social distancing, good hygiene etc have been placed around the building which will help to ensure staff stay alert.

We are now building on this risk assessment across our premises and services to ensure safety for all C3 stakeholders is maintained. Over the next few weeks we will proactively be contacting our Care Home and Hospice customer base to carry out a risk assessment with them.  The aim of this approach is twofold. It will determine the need for a return to our planned preventative maintenance program, ensuring the cared for receive the very best care. It will also identify the level of risk associated with our technical team entering these establishments.

We know the situation in individual homes and hospices can vary significantly from home to home and regionally. By contacting our customers we will also gain a better understanding of their individual Covid-19 response procedures, to ensure we meet their requirements. In this way we hope to alleviate any concerns our customers may have and safeguard all parties concerned, ensuring the smooth operation of our services.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 11/06/2020

This week has seen us prepare for a small increase in staff numbers at our HQ with additional measures being put in place. These key staff members are expected to return to the office next week. All other staff who can work from home will continue to do so.

We continue to keep an eye on Government statements and the latest statistics, and in particular we are monitoring the ‘R’ rate in the North West, where we are based.

Although the Covid-19 situation has meant we have had to rethink how we work, and put in place many safety measures, we still continue to work effectively. It is a testament to the commitment and dedication of our staff, that last month we completed:

  • 100% of urgent repairs
  • 100% of LOLER tests within Nursing Homes
  • 90% of customer orders

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 05/06/2020

Following on from last week’s update, our DRT met this week to risk assess Select Medical’s HQ for a slight increase in staff numbers. Whilst many staff remain working from home, a small number of key staff will shortly return to the office to assist with essential operational & servicing work that cannot be carried out as effectively from home.

Select Medical’s priority still remains the safety of all staff and C3 stakeholders. Our efforts thus far have ensured our operations have continued without interruption. We know from the feedback we’ve received, that the hard work of the team is appreciated by our customers with regular comments echoing the same sentiment –  “I would like to take this opportunity thank you and your team for keeping us well stocked during this busy and stressful period.”

As we are now settling into the ‘new-normal’, and as we believe this will be here to stay for some time, our regular DRT meetings will continue with an emphasis on ensuring ongoing safety is aligned with our positive procedures for staying alert.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 27/05/2020

As we’re sure you’re aware, as of 1st of June and then again in the middle of June, an increasing number of previously closed areas of society will start to re-open. In light of these changes, Select Medical will start to risk-assess all members of staff currently working from home to ascertain whether they can return to the office. Those who can return to work in the office will only do so if the business needs demand it.  Otherwise they will continue to work from home under the current arrangements.

In order to facilitate this slightly increased number of personnel in the head office, the building will again be risk assessed to see where we can put extra measures in place to ensure staff safety, ready for this potential increase in numbers. Staff safety, along with the safety of our C3 stakeholders, continues to be our top priority. We continue to encourage all staff to remain vigilant and follow all safety procedures. Our regular DRT meetings will continue on a weekly basis to ensure we are fully prepared for all eventualities or changes to the situation.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 20/05/2020

Figures suggest that since the start of this pandemic there have been a reported 11,600 deaths within Care Homes. Whilst the weekly rates are slowly falling, Covid-19 is still rife within this sector. It must also be remembered that the NHS are still facing huge pressure and a second wave of infections needs to be avoided at all costs. For this reason we have strengthened our procedures and are continuing to ensure all external work is carefully risk assessed prior to work being undertaken.

Select Medical are maintaining their vigilance in all work areas, both internally and externally as our priority continues to be the safety of all concerned.  Due to our weekly DRT meetings and careful planning, all essential work continues to be carried out safely and our supply chain has been strengthened so all stock is available for dispatch.

We would like to thank all our customers for bearing with us, and providing essential information to help us with our procedures, so we can carry out our work safely.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 13/05/2020

Whilst the Government has recently announced a slight relaxation of the lockdown rules, our regular DRT meeting has concluded that for Select Medical our processes and procedures will not change.

All staff currently working from home will continue to do so and our stringent control measures for those in the office, or out in the wider community, remain the same. We envisage that these measures will remain in place until infection rates reduce significantly. However, we will continue to review the situation weekly and act in the best interests of our staff and our C3 stakeholders.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 06/05/2020

As the Government starts to discuss ways of getting businesses back to work, it is clear that careful planning is necessary to ensure we guard against complacency.  A return to a new normal and the planning around it is something we’ve been discussing on a weekly basis and will continue to do so.  Considerations include how we can maintain social distancing in the workplace with more staff gradually returning to the office and continuing with extended hours of work (we’re currently working 6am to 5pm across the business).

Although still quite different to normal practice, we are now starting to see a more stable travel of workflow across the business, which we believe will continue as long as covid-19 infection rates continue to fall.  In preparation for a potential second wave of infection, production of our mattresses and cushions has been stepped up, ready to meet the demands of our client base when they’re needed most.

Our 20 year history of the space has helped us gear-up to minimise the potential risks of rising incidences of pressure injuries, as a knock-on effect of coronavirus. We continue to provide training and support to help minimise this risk for all our C3 stakeholders.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 28/04/2020

Following the Prime Minister’s statement yesterday (27th Apr 2020), it is clear the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic is set to be with us in some capacity for a significant period.  While many businesses are either opening or planning to open, albeit with restrictions and social distancing measures in place, it is vitally important that we do not become complacent.

The fact remains that the Covid-19 virus is deadly and all measures to protect those who are particularly vulnerable, as well as all members of society, must still be adhered to. Latest figures of rising death tolls within the care home sector are a stark reminder that this pandemic is far from over.

Select Medical will therefore continue with its safe guarding measures and working from home policy to protect all 3 of our stakeholders – Care Provider, Carer and Cared for and also our own team who continue to carry out important work for the most vulnerable in our community.

Our DRT team continue to meet on a weekly basis and will start to work towards a comprehensive plan for returning to office work, through a staged and carefully considered approach. The implementation of this plan will however be dependent on the latest government advice and we will keep you informed as timescales become apparent.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 21/04/2020

Following the latest forecasts that the current COVID-19 lockdown measures could last until 11th May, our DRT has met to review the new timeline and its potential impact on our key services.

The result of the review concluded that during this time we will continue to employ the safe-guarding measures that have seen us able to carry out our key services during the lockdown period so far.

During the continued period we plan to:

  • Carry out all deliveries in-line with current safe practices and control measures
  • Carry out urgent service and repairs and LOLER tests with current safe practices and control measures
  • Provide essential rental equipment.

We will continue to protect our employee’s health and safety:

  • Enhanced infection control measures internally and externally
  • Remote working for office and field-based employees
  • Symptom screening
  • Additional PPE for employees
  • Limited interactions & social distancing for those staff unable to work remotely

These measures will ensure that we can continue to support the Care Home and NHS sectors at this challenging time.

Since the emergence of COVID-19 and associated surge of infections, urgent demand for our pressure prevention surfaces has increased compared to normal planned ordering levels.  In turn and to date, we have boosted our production to help address this higher demand. Our team continues to monitor the availability of, and source additional raw materials, components and equipment such as nursing care beds to help ensure supply continuity in care home and NHS channels.

In a recent post by our MD, David Elstone, gave praise to our staff supporting this effort to provide essential products and services to those on the frontline.  Our colleagues are rising to the challenge to make a meaningful difference for our C3 stakeholders. Our pledge to doing everything we can to support the healthcare system is a small, but important part of why we do what we do.  Getting our products under patients where they are most needed is always our priority.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 14/04/2020

While Coronavirus is presenting major challenges for our NHS, heavily funded Nightingale Care Centres have helped to ease the pressures currently faced by ICU departments.  Suppliers, amongst the hospital beds and pressure prevention surfaces sector, have come together to support the efforts of many.  This collaboration has helped to ensure these temporary care facilities can open their doors in the shortest possible time.

Across our communities, care home residents, their families and carers continue to struggle through.  Coronavirus is adding to the strain of existing and demanding circumstances.  Throughout this past month, we’ve been working hard to ensure we have readily available stock to ensure we’re there for those care homes that require our support, products and services.

While our care home clients continue to collaborate locally with GPs and pharmacists to ensure timely prescribing of medications, we’re supporting that process with on time delivery of suitable surfaces for vulnerable residents. These pressure relieving mattresses and cushions are helping to reduce the burden on carers’ time and are helping to maximise more face to face care, at a time when it’s needed most.

Our efforts to fairly distribute stock across all our routes to market continue and we’re increasing capacity as available stock is exhausted.

Pure air 8 Acute and specialist bariatric surfaces are available for any hospice or ICU that may require urgent same day delivery.

A good mix of Pure Air, Simpulse and OLA products are also available for same day and next day delivery.

Specialist suppliers of healthcare equipment continue to support care staff through this crisis; we’re happy to be playing our small part.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 07/04/2020

Updating further on the unfolding Coronavirus pandemic, we’re now settled into an unusual, but somewhat routine working practice across the whole business.

Our responsibility as a data controller is taken seriously. In the main, employees are working directly from our company computer system and will only take documents from the office for processing when absolutely necessary.  In these few instances, documents are transferred safely, remain confidential and are returned at the first opportunity.  All employees currently working from home are aware of, and have been firmly reminded of, the importance of data protection.

Throughout this period of uncertainty, health and safety of our people is paramount. Use of regular and appropriate PPE has been implemented for those supporting frontline care workers with delivery, service and cleaning responsibilities (please see below for further policy details).  Additional equipment has been ordered for use in other areas where it’s considered a necessary precaution. For temporary homeworkers, consideration of the working environment over an extended term is also under review.  Ongoing health and safety considerations, including risk assessments, remain a priority while staff are required to operate a pc/laptop from home.

Since government enforced social distancing commenced, demand for our products and services has been high.  Please be assured that we continue to provide good availability of pressure prevention mattress and seating devices across our range.  Production planning has been stepped up across our entire range over the coming months to ensure demand is catered for.  Delivery and service operations remain uninterrupted to the NHS, care home and distributor markets.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 31/03/2020

Our regular updates around the outbreak of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) are designed to keep you updated on Select Medical’s operations as the situation unfolds.

We would like to assure you that we remain able to deliver essential healthcare products, the provision of rental equipment, LOLER testing and cleaning and decontamination services. These are a priority with 100% of this essential work still being carried out.

Last week, as expected, we were inundated with enquiries regarding fulfilment of our customers’ existing orders.  In addition, there was a dramatic increase in the level of new enquiries with increased demand in all-of the routes to market Select Medical operate in. We are in constant communication with our own supply chain to satisfy this uplift and support the NHS, Care Homes and distributors.

To date both active and reactive surfaces remain available.  However, we would urge any customers forecasting an increase in requirements, or who are worried about future supply, to contact our internal sales team at their earliest possible convenience – call 01254 668899.

This week, we’d also like to highlight the efforts of our management team and staff. Our team have worked hard, despatching many orders to safeguard vulnerable patients at risk of pressure ulcer development. Although currently operating under a skeleton staff onsite, our priority is still to ensure Care providers, Carers and the Cared for remain at the centre of our daily activity.

We continue to meet via video conferencing weekly to monitor Select Medical’s business continuity plan.  We will post further updates of any major developments as they happen and will give a status update next week.

If you have any questions, requests or concerns relating to any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

COVID-19 Update: 24/03/2020

Following the latest Government response to the Covid-19 pandemic we want to update you further on the measures we are taking to keep staff and stakeholders safe.

Select Medical have increased the number of staff members working from home. Initially, essential staff to our on-going operation remained in work, resulting in 15% of the workforce working from home.  This week we have put in place further measures to safeguard our key services at this crucial time, whilst enabling more staff (40%) to work from home.

We are experiencing very high demand for support surfaces from the wider healthcare community, NHS, distributors, Care homes and even competitors.  Our supply chain remains strong and product is available, even at this extremely challenging time.

We continue to review internal procedures and are satisfied that the additional stringent measures in place, in-light-of the pandemic, are protecting our key services and workers and minimising risk:

  • All staff are following stringent hand washing protocols and have been supplied with hand sanitiser.
  • Regular dialogue between Select Medical and customers prior to any work being carried out to ensure the latest information on any health issues are communicated – self-isolation, symptoms etc
  • LOLER inspection/servicing/repair work is carried out in an isolated location onsite or in an outside area. Equipment is to be moved prior to engineers attending and single use protective gloves are worn during inspection.
  • In most cases delivery is drop-off only. Where this is not possible the same stringent procedures are followed as above.
  • Cleaning and decontamination staff continue to follow stringent infection prevention policies and have protective face masks, full body aprons and gloves.

Delivery of essential healthcare products, the provision of rental equipment, LOLER testing and cleaning and decontamination services remains a priority with 100% of this essential work still being carried out.

We will continue to update you on a weekly basis as the situation unfolds – please check back week commencing 30th March for further details.

COVID-19 Update: 19/03/2020

In light of the developing Coronavirus situation, Select Medical would like to reassure our customers and partners that we are monitoring the situation on a daily basis and reacting to this changing situation as necessary. We are following protocol as advised by the Government and relevant healthcare trades association (BHTA) and have put in place a number of measures to keep our staff and C3 stakeholders safe.

Providing pressure prevention surfaces and services is vital to patient well-being – we will therefore be open for business as usual, and are committed to our service and contract agreements, but with some new procedures in place:

      • Non-urgent service work will be postponed.

      • We will follow delivery, installation, service and repair services in line with customer’s own containment procedures.

      • We have implemented stringent hygiene and self-isolation policies to try to limit the potential risk of catching/spreading the virus.

      • All employees whose role allows them to, will now work from home.

      • All external meetings and visits to our premises will be limited to essential only.

      • Our business continuity plan will be updated as this situation unfolds, and we will keep all stakeholders informed of any changes to our operation as necessary.

We understand that this is a difficult time for everyone, but we will continue to provide the support Care Homes, the NHS and Hospices require at this time. If you have any questions or queries regarding our procedures around COVID-19 then please contact Lee Elson via email lee.elson@selectmedical.co.uk or call us on 01254 668899.
