Select Medical Helps Local School
Leading pressure care specialist Select Medical has established a link to help local High School, Blakewater College. The school situated in a socio economic deprived area of Blackburn, is challenged with adding value to a child's educational and personal development. Over recent times pupils and staff at the school have come together to breath new life and belief into the classroom.
General Manager at Select Medical, David Elstone commented, "At the backend of 2009 our Ray Booth, a former pupil of the then Shadsworth High School approached the management team with the idea of registering at his old school as a volunteer. A decision was readily agreed and the formalities of CRB inspection ensued. To date, Ray has been involved in fund raising to buy instruments within the newly established music department and is currently involved in attempting to raise near £12,000 towards sending six pupils and three staff to Taiwan for the First Lego League, world finals."
During 2009, a team of six year 7 children representing Blakewater College competed in a National Lego event earning second place overall. This achievement has resulted in an invite for the children to represent the UK in Taiwan during May 2010.
When asked about his experience of working with the children in school Ray said, "It's a million miles from pressure care, but so far it's been great fun and extremely rewarding - I hope we can achieve what's required for these kids to realise their ambition to compete in this prestigious event."
Blakewater College Acting Deputy Headteacher Maj Ditta explained, "Our school has made great strides in recent times; staff and pupils are pulling together. Progress is underway and our children are benefitting through a renewed teamwork ethic. The school has extended its contact with local businesses and the recent financial and voluntary support from Select Medical is greatly appreciated."
